Japan organized over 200 events in 2022 to celebrate 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations with India

NEW DELHI: Japan organised over 200 events throughout India during the year 2022 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Japan-India Diplomatic Relations. More than 100 Japanese and Indian companies supported these events with sponsorship funds and volunteers despite the difficult business circumstances caused by Covid pandemic and soaring prices of the materials and the commodities.

Ambassador of Japan to India Hiroshi Suzuki said that the steering committee of the 70th anniversary of Japan-India Diplomatic Relations organised over 200 events throughout India during the year 2022 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Japan-India Diplomatic Relations to celebrate our friendship.

“We prioritised three pillars. First was the interchange between young generations. Second, was digital as we put emphasis on SNS and working to share with so many people in India. And third is Yabusame and Tent-pegging performance. We received generous support by Japanese and Indian companies, which enabled us to organise more 200 events throughout the year,” said the Ambassador during his address at the closing event of the 70th Anniversary celebrations Japanese Yabusme (horseback archery) and Indian Tent-pegging organised at the Army Polo & Riding Club in New Delhi on December 19.

While explaining about the Yabusame, Ambassador SUZUKI said, “Yabusame was first performed in 1187, about 830 years ago, and art has been handed down from generations from generations. Today, a group of 15 archers from the Ogasawara School, and direct descendants of the 32nd generation from the first grandmaster who actually study Yabusame back in 1187.”

Yabusame is Japanese traditional martial arts in which arrows are shot with a bow at a target from a galloping horse. Tent Pegging is a cavalry sport that has been widely practiced in India since ancient times. Both sides celebrated their long-standing friendship through the fusion of their traditional equestrian performance.

​At the venue, Chang Jae-bok, Ambassador, South Korea to India along with his  wife, Randeep Hooda, a Bollywood actor and equestrian, were also present. The audience also enjoyed Taiko, Japanese traditional drum, and Khatak, Indian traditional dance. The event was a fitting testament to the friendship between Japan and India.

The steering committee of the 70th anniversary of Japan-India Diplomatic Relations consisted of the Embassy of Japan, Japan Association Delhi, Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry in India (JCCII), Japan Foundation New Delhi, Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) New Delhi Office, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) India Office, and JNTO Delhi Office.

On this occasion, Susumu Wakamori, Chairman, Steering Committee, and CMD, Marubeni Group in India, said, “More than 100 Japanese and Indian companies donated generously in terms of sponsnorship funds and also as volunteers despite difficult business circumstances caused by pendamic and soaring prices of the materials and the commodities. Many events youth exchange programme Ideathon, Hack the Innovative Future when 40 students Japanese and Indian youths tarvelled together by road from New Delhi to Varanasi.”
