New Delhi. The globally popular Korean martial art – Taekwondo will soon be taught in some of the select schools in Delhi and NCR towns.

With this, the Indian students will be able to hone their skills on this Korean self-defense technique.

The initiative to launch Taekwondo in select schools is coming from the Korean Cultural Centre India (KCCI).

“We have plans to introduce Taekwondo training classes in about 10 model schools in New Delhi and surrounding towns like Gurgaon, Noida, and Faridabad. We already have partnered with over 100 schools where the Korean language is already being taught, But, we are going to select only about 10 active schools to start with for Taekwondo classes,”  Kim, Kum-Pyoung, Director/Counsellor, Korean Cultural Centre India (KCCI) told the Asian Community News (ACN) Network in an interview.

The KCCI will provide the necessary support to the selected schools in terms of trainers etc. If this model succeeded, the program would be expanded to more schools also, said Kim adding that Taekwondo is an important event to India as many cities are already teaching this self-defense martial art.

When asked for the names of the model schools where Taekwondo will be taught, Kim, Kum-Pyoung said that the names were being discussed and the selected schools will be contacted for the program after this.

“If the selected model schools agree to Taekwondo classes, we may start the same from July itself in Delhi and NCR towns,” said Kim.

According to the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) – the International Governing Body for the sport, Taekwondo is one of the most systematic and scientific Korean traditional martial arts, that teaches more than physical fighting skills.

“It is a discipline that shows ways of enhancing our spirit and life through training our body and mind. Today, it has become a global sport that has gained an international reputation, and stands among the official games in the Olympics,” it said.

A lot is being done in India by KCCI to promote Taekwondo with the local youths.

KCCI would select 20 bright sportspersons from out of the 2nd All India Inter SAI- Korea Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo Championship 2019 happening in New Delhi from June 7-10, to make them participate at international level competitions and also for advanced training in Korea.

“Last year, in Asian Games in Jakarta, two of our Indian students from our Taekwondo academy participated, though they could not win medals. In Delhi, the Korean masters Master Lee train the Indian students,” said Kim.
