AKLEI Korean Language Education Seminar: Building Bridges Through Language & Culture
The seminar would witness presence of Prof. Anil Rai, Dean of International Relations at DU, Prof. Do Young Kim, President of AKLEI and Hony. Director at JMI. H.E. Sang Woo Lim, Deputy Chief of Mission from the Republic of Korea, Hyunsoo Choi, Director, Korea Foundation, and Prof. Kapil Kapoor, a retired luminary from JNU on its inaugural day on April 26.
NEW DELHI: In the heart of India’s capital city, Delhi, a prestigious gathering is set to take place – the Association of Korean Language Educators in India (AKLEI) 2024 Seminar on Korean Language Education in India and its Indianization. Scheduled for April 26th and 27th at the Faculty of Arts, University of Delhi, this event promises to be a melting pot of ideas, insights, and cultural exchange.
The inaugural day, chaired by Prof. Anil Rai, the Dean of International Relations at DU, will kick off with an address by Prof. Do Young Kim, the President of AKLEI and Honorary Director at JMI. H.E. Sang Woo Lim, the Deputy Chief of Mission from the Republic of Korea, and Hyunsoo Choi, Director of the Korea Foundation, will also grace the occasion with their presence. The keynote address by Prof. Kapil Kapoor, a retired luminary from JNU, will set the stage for an enriching discourse on Korean language education in the Indian context.
The sessions on Day 1 will delve into various facets of language, education, and culture. From Neerja Samajdar’s exploration of the changing landscape of Korean language education in India, Paresh Kumar’s Pragmatic Approach to Teaching: Localizing Learning of to Anna Yang’s analysis of major elements in teaching Korean as a foreign language, attendees will gain valuable insights into the diverse approaches and challenges faced in this field.
Parallel sessions will offer a deep dive into pedagogical methodologies, translation challenges, and the integration of Korean culture into the Indian educational framework. Dr. Ahanthem Romita Devi will chair a session focusing on translation and pedagogy, where scholars will discuss cultural translation, linguistic features, and the challenges of teaching Korean-Hindi literary translation.
As the sun sets on Day 1, participants will leave with minds buzzing with ideas and hearts warmed by the spirit of collaboration and cultural exchange.
Day 2 of the seminar will commence with a special session chaired by Prof. Nabin Kumar Panda, exploring the National Education Policy (NEP) and its implications on language education, particularly in the context of India’s eastern engagement. The subsequent sessions will delve deeper into the intertwining of language, culture, and pedagogy, with topics ranging from learners’ challenges to the globalizing of curricula.
In Session VII, chaired by Dr. Hema, the focus will shift to Indianizing Korean culture and adapting pedagogies to enhance Korean language education in India. Scholars will address the challenges and opportunities in teaching Korean culture through mediums such as Korean drama, focusing on the needs of intermediate-level learners.
The seminar will culminate in a comprehensive discussion and valedictory session chaired by Dr. Kaushal Kumar, where participants will reflect on the insights gained and chart the way forward for Korean language education in India. A vote of thanks will be extended, marking the end of a fruitful and illuminating event.
