JNU veteran Prof Prem K. Motwani conferred Japan’s Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon honor

NEW DELHI: Professor Prem K. Motwani (66 years) is the proud recipient of Japan’s highest honor ‘Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon’ in this year’s foreign recipients category of Japan Government.

According to the Embassy of Japan in India, the Government of Japan on November 3, announced the names of foreign recipients of the 2020 Autumn Decorations.

Former Professor, Centre for Japanese Studies, School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Prof. Motwani is among this year’s foreign recipients of the top Japanese honor in recognition of his contributions to promoting academic exchange and mutual understanding between Japan and India.

Professor Motwani will formally receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon in some time.

According to the Embassy of Japan in New Delhi, Professor Prem K. Motwani played a significant role for over 40 years in promoting academic exchange between India and Japan, through his research on Japanese management as well as his efforts to spread it in India, and contributing to the Japanese language education in India.

Utilizing his excellent Japanese language skills, Professor Motwani has published dictionaries and translated many Japanese publications into English, besides functioning as an interpreter for several high-level dignitaries of India and Japan, including prime ministers.

Some of his literary works include – A Dictionary of Loanwords Usage: Katakana English and (English and Japanese Edition).

Through his services, Professor Motwani has contributed immensely to the promotion of mutual understanding between India and Japan.

On the occasion of the conferral, the Embassy of Japan in India has the honor to pay tribute to Professor Prem K. Motwani for his long years of distinguished services, stated a press communiqué from the Embassy of Japanese, New Delhi.

Professor Motwani is Master Phil., Jawaharlal Nehru University, 1981, and did his Doctor of Philosophy, Jawaharlal Nehru University, 1996.

He was Assistant professor, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, 1979-1986; associate professor, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, 1986-1995; and Chairperson Center for East Asian Languages, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, 1990-1991.

Professor Motwani was Consultant, Tokyo Institute Japanese Language, 1992 and Honorary research associate Institute RyuKuan Culture, Okinawa International University, 1995-1997.

Prem Motwani has also been listed as a noteworthy language educator by Marquis Who’s Who.

His avocations include travel and music.
