NEW DELHI: The ever-growing community of South Korean expatriates scattered across India may soon have a stronger and more effective communication platform to get close to each other.

The options include online and offline both; in the form of a community magazine with pan India presence, or a dedicated YouTube channel for the Korean community.

Numbering about 15,000, the South Korean people have been living in about ten Indian cities like New Delhi, Gurugram (Gurgaon), Noida, Mumbai, Chennai, Pune, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad.

Namaste India magazine caters to the Korean community in Delhi NCR only.

However, having been living in these cities for work near their offices and factories, these expatriates are not connected to each other on a pan-India basis.

“There is no communication between our people living in Chennai and Delhi. Therefore, we want to set up infrastructure or a common pan-India based communication platform to bring them closer, interact more on a regular basis. The plan is to connect all Koreans from Dharamshala to Kerela,” said Euy Don Park, the Chairman, Korean Association in India, a representative and apex body of the Korean community in India.

Recently, the regional presidents of the association from all 10 cities met in Ahmedabad, Gujarat to discuss ways and means to create the infrastructure for the Korean community across India to bring them closer and communicate more.

“At present, Koreans are inter-connected online in their respective cities on a social media mobile application (app) BAND. Another way is the magazine like NAMASTE INDIA but its reach is restricted to New Delhi and NCR towns only,” said Park.

BAND mobile app is very popular in Korea, the way WhatsApp messenger is in India, and the majority of Koreans use this online facility to remain in touch, share information.

However, the meeting of regional presidents discussed many options and they are all deliberating on all alternatives.

“The options include a pan-India magazine like NAMASTE INDIA or a dedicated YouTube channel for the Korean community. These are the options to cover the Koreas all over the country,” added Park.

The majority of the Koreans live in and around cities that have Korean MNCs like Hyundai, Samsung, LG, KIA  as well as their joint venture or OEM supplier companies in India.
