NEW DELHI: Taiwan is gradually becoming one of the top destinations for Indian students looking to study abroad.

One of the major reasons for this is the good performance of educational and research environments, with at least 11 universities ranked within the top 500 worldwide according to QS World University Ranking.

The other important reason is attractive scholarships that are provided by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education (MOE).

Taiwan’s MOE provides scholarships in an effort to encourage outstanding Indian students to undertake degree studies in Taiwan so as to familiarize themselves with the academic environment in Taiwan and promote bilateral exchange programmes between two countries.

The scholarships are not just open for Indian students but students from countries like Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal can also apply for them.

The MOE offers two major scholarships, the MOE Taiwan Scholarship and the MOE Hyuayu (Chinese) Enrichment scholarship.

Under the Taiwan Scholarship, the MOE awards outstanding students undertaking undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Taiwan by awarding each recipient an amount of approximately US$ 1,331  to cover payment of Tuition and academic fees, including credit fee and living allowance along with a monthly stipend of US$499 for undergraduate studies and US$665 for postgraduate studies.

Whereas the Hyuayu Scholarship provides a monthly stipend of approximately US$832, to encourage international students to undertake Mandarin learning courses in Taiwan to increase their understanding of the language and Taiwanese culture.

According to the statistics of Taiwan’s Ministry of Education, there were over 1.2 Lakh international students studying in Taiwan in 2018, out of which 2,938 students are from India.

Among those students, more than 50% of students are doing their master’s and Ph.D. degree programme.  This number has gone up drastically from only 5 Indian students in 2003, thanks to the efforts of Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in India (TECC); which facilitates interaction between Taiwan’s MOE and Indian students and hopes to drastically increase this number in the coming years.

The application process for the scholarships has begun and the last date to apply is 31st March 2020. To apply and learn more about the scholarships, the applicants can visit the official website of TECC at https://www.roc-taiwan.org/in_en/index.html.
