Dy Tea Master Soko Shimura brings Japanese tea tradition in New Delhi
The live demonstration highlighted the elegance, precision and mindfulness that define the Japanese tea tradition, where hospitality, harmony and respect are as important as the beverage itself.
New Delhi: The Embassy of Japan in India brought to life one of the country’s most refined cultural traditions by hosting an engaging lecture and live demonstration on the Japanese way of tea, offering guests an intimate introduction to the history, aesthetics and philosophy of chanoyu, or the tea ceremony. The session was led by Soko Shimura, Deputy Tea Master, Urasenke Konnichian, and gave attendees a rare opportunity to not only observe the ritual but also savour matcha while understanding the cultural values embedded in every movement.

The programme drew appreciation for its quiet sophistication, and for the way it translated a centuries-old Japanese tradition into a meaningful cultural experience for an Indian audience. Guests were introduced to the story of matcha, its deep roots in Japanese culture, and the highly disciplined yet serene manner in which tea is prepared and served.
The live demonstration highlighted the elegance, precision and mindfulness that define the Japanese tea tradition, where hospitality, harmony and respect are as important as the beverage itself.

The cultural engagement continued with a tea gathering hosted by Ambassador ONO Keiichi at his residence, where distinguished guests were offered a more intimate glimpse into the beauty and essence of Japanese culture. On that occasion, Shimura served koicha, or thick tea, accompanied by traditional Japanese sweets, creating a setting that reflected the refined spirit of Japanese hospitality. The gathering underscored how tea in Japan is far more than a drink; it is a carefully nurtured art form that embodies balance, grace and human connection.
Among the notable guests present was Amitabh Kant, who is widely described as the former India G20 Sherpa and former CEO of NITI Aayog. His presence added further significance to the occasion, which brought together distinguished invitees for a shared cultural experience rooted in simplicity and depth.
The tea ceremony has long occupied a special place in Japan’s cultural identity, representing an appreciation of beauty in restraint and a reverence for the moment. Through the lecture, demonstration and residence gathering, the Embassy succeeded in presenting not just a ceremonial practice, but a living expression of Japanese thought and aesthetics. For the guests, tasting matcha and koicha while watching the ritual unfold offered an experience that was both sensory and philosophical.
The event also reflected the growing importance of cultural diplomacy in India-Japan relations. Beyond trade, technology and strategic cooperation, such interactions help deepen people-to-people ties by opening windows into each other’s civilisational traditions.
In that sense, the Embassy’s tea event was not merely a cultural presentation, but a subtle and elegant bridge between two societies with a shared appreciation for heritage, refinement and hospitality.
By the end of the evening, what lingered was not only the distinct flavour of matcha and the sweetness of the accompanying confectionery, but also the quiet impression of a tradition that values presence, discipline and grace. Through Shimura’s deft presentation and Ambassador ONO’s warm hosting, the Japanese way of tea left guests with a memorable encounter with the soul of Japan.
