CHENNAI, June 4, 2026: Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has reaffirmed its commitment to Tamil Nadu by designating the state as its flagship electric vehicle (EV) hub for India while announcing a strategic skill development partnership with the Government of Tamil Nadu aimed at enhancing the global employability of the state’s youth.

The collaboration marks a significant step in strengthening Tamil Nadu’s position as a leading centre for sustainable mobility, advanced manufacturing and automotive innovation. The skill development initiative, scheduled to commence operations in December 2027, will focus on equipping young people with expertise in emerging technologies such as electric vehicles, hydrogen mobility, robotics, automation, artificial intelligence-enabled manufacturing and smart manufacturing systems.

Announcing the initiative, Tarun Garg, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of HMIL, said the company’s efforts would further reinforce Tamil Nadu’s leadership in sustainable mobility while creating a future-ready workforce. He noted that Hyundai plans to introduce two new models from its Chennai facility this year, including its first mass-market dedicated electric vehicle, which is expected to accelerate EV adoption and strengthen the country’s electric mobility ecosystem.

Hyundai highlighted that it has already established Tamil Nadu’s first battery sub-assembly plant for EV powertrains and is actively localising key EV components. The company has also built a fast-charging network across the state, comprising 39 stations and 78 charging points, and plans to expand this infrastructure further over the next few years.

The new skill development partnership will be implemented in collaboration with industrial training institutes, polytechnics, engineering colleges and skill development institutions across Tamil Nadu. The programme will also focus on workplace communication and language skills to improve employment opportunities both within India and internationally.

In addition to advancing electric mobility, Hyundai announced plans to increase localisation levels across its EV and internal combustion engine operations from 82 per cent to 90 per cent over the next five to six years. The company also aims to increase procurement from Tamil Nadu-based suppliers by nearly ₹4,000 crore, a move expected to generate around 2,000 additional jobs in the state.

HMIL further reaffirmed its commitment to invest more than ₹26,000 crore in Tamil Nadu between 2023 and 2032 as part of its broader ₹45,000 crore investment plan. The investment is expected to support industrial growth, strengthen the innovation ecosystem, promote sustainability and create substantial employment opportunities, further establishing Tamil Nadu as a global automotive and mobility hub.

With its focus on electric mobility, localisation and skill development, Hyundai’s latest initiatives underline the company’s long-term vision of building future-ready mobility solutions while contributing to India’s manufacturing and economic growth.
