Guwahati, India: Northeast India took a significant step towards building a sustainable India–Japan education and skills corridor with the launch of a Japanese Language Teacher Development Program in Guwahati, designed to address the shortage of trained Japanese language teachers in the region.

The Japanese Language Teacher Development Program – Northeast India was inaugurated at the City Campus of Assam Skill University, bringing together Assam Skill University, The Japan Foundation, New Delhi, and the Indo-Japan Business Council in a collaborative initiative aimed at strengthening Japanese language education and long-term bilateral cooperation.

The programme assumes importance at a time when interest in Japan among young people in Northeast India is growing steadily, driven by opportunities in education, skills development, employment, business and cultural exchange. By creating a pool of qualified teachers locally, the initiative seeks to ensure that Japanese language learning in the region does not remain dependent on limited external resources but develops into a long-term academic and skills ecosystem.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by Shri Biswajit Daimary, Hon’ble Minister of Skill, Employment & Entrepreneurship, Government of Assam, as Chief Guest. The event was attended by Shri Subhash Chandra Das, IAS (Retd.), Vice Chancellor, Assam Skill University; Shri Hanif Noorani, ACS, Registrar, Assam Skill University; Koji Sato, Director General, The Japan Foundation, New Delhi; Siddharth Deshmukh, President, Indo-Japan Business Council; and representatives from academia, industry and other invited guests.

The programme has been developed to tackle one of the key challenges in expanding Japanese language education in Northeast India — the availability of trained teachers. Its larger objective is to strengthen local teaching capacity so that Japanese language education can grow sustainably across schools, colleges, universities and skill institutions in the region.

Under the collaboration, The Japan Foundation will provide academic guidance, expertise in Japanese language education and teacher-training methodologies. Assam Skill University will serve as the institutional partner responsible for programme delivery through its academic infrastructure and ecosystem. IJBC, as a bilateral chamber working to strengthen India–Japan cooperation, will support stakeholder coordination, institutional engagement, outreach and implementation facilitation.

The course is being conducted as an intensive classroom-based teacher development programme for selected participants in Guwahati. Along with Japanese language proficiency, participants will be trained in teaching methodologies, classroom practice, communication skills and cultural understanding, enabling them to teach beginner-level Japanese language courses across educational and skill institutions in Northeast India.

Beyond language learning, the initiative is expected to contribute to academic exchange, workforce readiness and people-to-people connections between India and Japan. It also reflects the growing importance of language capacity in supporting education, employment and institutional cooperation between the two countries.

Speaking on the occasion, representatives of the participating institutions noted that the programme represents an investment in the future of India–Japan relations. By developing local teaching capacity in Northeast India, the initiative seeks to open new opportunities for students, educators and institutions while strengthening educational and cultural ties between India and Japan.

The Indo-Japan Business Council described the initiative as an example of how educational institutions and bilateral organisations can work together to create practical, long-term outcomes that benefit both India and Japan.

Assam Skill University is the first skill university in Northeast India, established by the Government of Assam to promote skill-based, industry-aligned and employability-oriented education.

The Japan Foundation is Japan’s official institution dedicated to promoting international cultural exchange through Japanese language education, cultural programmes and intellectual exchange. IJBC is a bilateral chamber working to strengthen business, educational, cultural, institutional and people-to-people ties between India and Japan.
