New Delhi, 22 April 2026: Applications for the highly sought-after Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship 2027 under the “Research Students” category have officially opened, offering a major opportunity for students aiming to pursue postgraduate studies in Japan. The scholarship, administered by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, supports international students in undertaking advanced academic research at leading Japanese universities.

The program provides two academic pathways for selected candidates. Students may enroll in a doctoral course spanning three years or a master’s course lasting two years. For those who require proficiency in the Japanese language, an additional six-month preparatory course will be provided before the commencement of the degree program.

Japanese postgraduate education emphasizes research-based learning, making it essential for applicants to identify a prospective academic advisor in Japan. Candidates are also required to submit a well-structured and original research proposal aligned with their chosen field and advisor’s expertise.

The scholarship offers comprehensive financial support for doctoral candidates, including a monthly stipend of approximately 145,000 yen (around ₹85,300), full coverage of tuition and academic fees, and round-trip travel expenses between India and Japan. These benefits make the program one of the most attractive international scholarships available.

While the exact number of available slots for 2027 has not yet been announced, previous years have seen approximately 50 candidates selected from a large applicant pool. Last year alone recorded around 3,170 applications, highlighting the competitive nature of the program.

Interested applicants must submit their applications by May 15, 2026. Detailed guidelines, eligibility criteria, and application forms are available through the official portal of the Embassy of Japan in India.

Selected candidates will be required to travel to Japan in April, September, or October 2027, depending on their course schedule and university placement.

For further inquiries, applicants can contact the Japan Information Centre at the Embassy of Japan in New Delhi.

This scholarship continues to strengthen academic collaboration between India and Japan, offering students a unique opportunity to gain global exposure and contribute to cutting-edge research.
