Number of Japanese Cos. in India reach 1454; up by 13 only in 2019

The number of Japanese companies had increased by 72 during the year 2018 to 1441 from 1,369 in 2017. The year 2018 registered a 5% growth while it was 0.9% in the year 2019.

NEW DELHI: The number of Japanese companies in India grew marginally by 13 only in the year 2019 (till October) as compared to the previous year. As per the data released by the Embassy of Japan in India on Monday evening, the total count of Japanese companies in India grew from 1441 in the year 2018 to 1454 till October 2019.

In deep contrast, the total number of Japanese companies had increased by 72 during the year 2018 to 1441 from 1,369 in 2017. The year 2018 registered a 5% growth while it was recorded at 0.9% in the year 2019.

Haryana continues to remain a favourite destination for the Japanese companies in the year 2019 as this northern state strengthened its tally of Japanese companies by 14, from 393 Japanese companies in 2018 to 407 in 2019. It hosts the maximum number of companies in India.

Surprisingly, West Bengal also gained by five companies, its number grew from 19 to 24.

There was a significant increase in the number of companies in such sectors as information and communications as well as services. The manufacturing sector accounts for half of the total Japanese companies and more than a third of the Japanese business establishments in India.

Maharashtra and New Delhi lost the numbers from 247 companies to 243 and from 162 to 156 companies in the year 2019.

The Embassy and the Consulate General of Japan and Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) updated the list of Japanese companies and business establishments in India till October 2019, with the cooperation of the Japan Chambers of Commerce and industry in India (JCCII).

On the other hand, the total number of Japanese business establishments in India, as of October 2019, has been recorded at 5,022. It has decreased by 80 (1.6% decline) as compared to 5,102 in 2018.

The Embassy of Japan clarified that the total number of establishments in India decreased while the number of companies increased in the year 2019 because some companies became non-Japanese due to the closure of the office, corporate restructuring, change of ownership, etc.
