Youth, Culture and Business to Drive India–Japan 75th Anniversary Celebrations

New Delhi/Tokyo: Young people, creative industries and regional communities will move to the centre of India–Japan relations in 2027 as the two countries celebrate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties through an ambitious year-long programme extending far beyond traditional government ceremonies.

India and Japan will jointly observe 2027 as the “India–Japan Year of Shared Horizons,” bringing together students, artists, athletes, academics, scientists, businesses, financial institutions and local governments to help shape the partnership’s next phase.

The commemorative programme will cover both countries and encompass culture, manga and anime, gaming, sports, Buddhist tourism, science, space exploration and regional economic cooperation.

India and Japan established diplomatic relations on April 28, 1952. To mark the anniversary, the week of April 28, 2027, will be designated India–Japan Week, featuring coordinated outreach and public-engagement activities across the two countries.

A logo and theme competition will also invite Indian and Japanese citizens to visually express their ideas for the future of the India–Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.

Manga, anime and gaming become a new bridge: One of the most youth-focused initiatives will be IMAGE-75, an India–Japan partnership covering manga, anime and gaming.

Japanese manga, animation and gaming have developed a rapidly expanding following among Indian youth. At the same time, India is emerging as an important centre for animation, visual effects, gaming, comics and immersive creative technologies.

IMAGE-75 will seek to convert this mutual interest into active cooperation, professional exchanges and co-created content. The initiative could give Indian creative professionals opportunities to work with Japan’s established entertainment industries while allowing Japanese studios and gaming companies to tap India’s talent base and growing consumer market.

Youth participation will also drive Shared Future-75, which will bring together academics, policy experts, industry representatives and young people to develop recommendations for a peaceful, prosperous, resilient and sustainable future.

A second edition of the India–Japan Ideathon will involve students from both countries and travel to several Indian cities to solicit ideas for the partnership’s next stage.

Rang, Sur and Sakura: The cultural dimension of the anniversary will be presented through RASA-75: Rang, Sur and Sakura, a year-long journey through Indian and Japanese arts and living traditions.

The programme will connect performing and visual artists, traditional practitioners, cultural institutions and young creators. Its name combines the Indian concepts of colour and musical expression with the Japanese cherry blossom, creating a symbolic meeting point between the cultural identities of the two countries.

The anniversary will also highlight their much older civilisational connection through a Buddhist Pilgrimage Initiative.

A delegation from Japan will be invited to undertake a spiritual journey to important Buddhist sites in India. Besides recalling Buddhism’s role in connecting Indian and Japanese societies, the programme will promote India as a destination for Japanese pilgrims and spiritual tourists.

Cricket, Ekiden and sporting exchanges: Sports will become another channel of people-to-people engagement through SPORT-75, which will promote cooperation in athletic performance and sports management while taking note of India’s ambition to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036.

An India–Japan Friendship Cricket Match will be organised during the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 as a curtain-raiser to the anniversary celebrations.

Under Cricket Kizuna-75, two Indian coaches will visit Japan to conduct a week-long bootcamp for aspiring Japanese cricketers. The programme recognises cricket as an emerging bridge between the two societies.

An India–Japan Sports Week will follow in February 2027, including an Ekiden, or team relay-running event, in Delhi NCR. Ekiden is a popular Japanese long-distance relay format and its introduction into the anniversary programme will symbolise teamwork and shared progress.

Businesses to connect beyond major cities: The economic agenda will be carried forward through Business Connect-75, designed to build direct relationships between Indian industrial clusters, Japanese regional banks and their corporate clients.

India-focused roadshows, round-tables, cluster visits and curated business meetings will involve Japanese regional banks, Indian states, financial institutions, industry bodies and business associations.

The programme will build on the Next-Generation State-Prefecture Partnership and could help Indian states reach specialised Japanese small and medium-sized enterprises that have not yet entered the Indian market.

A related initiative, Empower Regional Linkage-75, will accelerate partnerships between Indian states and Japanese prefectures. Mutual visits and networking among local governments will be encouraged, including through an India–Japan Governors’ Network for Friendship and Exchange.

From laboratories to the Moon: Scientific and academic cooperation will be showcased through MIRAI-VIGYAN-75, combining the Japanese word for “future” with the Hindi word for “science.”

Special events planned for 2027 will include activities connected with the Lunar Polar Exploration Mission, or LUPEX, the IIT-H Japan Day and the India–Japan Universities Forum.

The lunar mission represents the growing technological ambition of the partnership, while university-level initiatives will promote collaboration among researchers, institutions and students.

Through these interconnected programmes, the Year of Shared Horizons is being designed as more than a celebration of diplomatic history. It seeks to engage the generation that will carry India–Japan relations into the future while extending the partnership from national capitals to campuses, cultural venues, sports grounds, laboratories, business clusters and local communities.

The breadth of the programme reflects the transformation of India–Japan relations over 75 years—from diplomatic friendship into a multidimensional partnership connecting economies, technologies, cultures and people.

両国は2027年を**「日印交流年（India–Japan Year of Shared Horizons）」**として共同で祝い、学生、芸術家、スポーツ選手、研究者、科学者、企業、金融機関、地方自治体などの参加を通じて、日印パートナーシップの新たな段階を形づくる。

記念事業は両国各地で行われ、文化、漫画、アニメ、ゲーム、スポーツ、仏教観光、科学、宇宙探査、地域経済協力など、幅広い分野を対象とする。

インドと日本は1952年4月28日に外交関係を樹立した。この節目を記念し、2027年4月28日を含む週は**「日印週間（India–Japan Week）」**に指定され、両国で連携した広報・交流活動が実施される。

また、日印両国の国民が**「日印特別戦略的グローバル・パートナーシップ」**の未来を自由に表現するロゴおよびテーマのコンテストも開催される。

漫画、アニメ、ゲームが新たな架け橋に

若者を主な対象とする代表的な取り組みの一つが、漫画、アニメ、ゲーム分野の日印協力事業**「IMAGE-75」**である。

日本の漫画、アニメ、ゲームは、インドの若者の間で急速に人気を高めている。一方、インドもアニメーション、VFX、ゲーム、コミック、没入型クリエイティブ技術の重要拠点として台頭している。

IMAGE-75は、こうした相互の関心を具体的な協力、専門家交流、コンテンツの共同制作へと発展させることを目指す。

この取り組みを通じ、インドのクリエイターが日本の成熟したエンターテインメント産業と協働する機会が生まれる一方、日本のアニメ制作会社やゲーム企業にとっても、インドの豊富な人材と成長市場を活用する道が開かれる可能性がある。

若者の参加は**「Shared Future-75」**でも重視される。同事業では、研究者、政策専門家、産業界の代表者、若者が一堂に会し、平和で繁栄し、強靱かつ持続可能な共通の未来に向けた政策提言を策定する。

また、第2回日印アイデアソンには両国の学生が参加し、インドの複数都市を巡りながら、日印関係の次の段階を切り開く革新的なアイデアを探る。

「色・音・桜」で結ぶ文化交流

外交関係樹立75周年の文化的側面は、**「RASA-75：Rang, Sur and Sakura（色・音・桜）」**を通じて表現される。

これは、インドと日本の芸術や生活文化を紹介する一年間の文化交流事業であり、舞台芸術家、視覚芸術家、伝統芸能の継承者、文化機関、若手クリエイターなどを結びつける。

名称には、インドの「色」と「音楽的表現」を意味する言葉と、日本を象徴する桜が組み合わされており、両国文化が出会う場を象徴している。

また、両国間のより古い文明的なつながりは、**「仏教巡礼イニシアチブ」**を通じて紹介される。

日本から仏教関係者による代表団をインドに招き、主要な仏教聖地を巡る精神的な旅を実施する予定である。この取り組みは、インドと日本を結ぶ仏教の歴史的役割を改めて示すとともに、日本からインドへの仏教巡礼・精神文化観光の促進を目指す。

クリケットと駅伝で広がるスポーツ交流

スポーツ分野では、**「SPORT-75」**を通じて、アスリート、指導者、専門家の交流とスポーツ・パフォーマンス分野での協力を促進する。

同事業では、2036年のオリンピック・パラリンピック競技大会招致を目指すインドの意欲も踏まえ、両国間のスポーツ協力を拡大する。

75周年記念事業の前段として、2026年の愛知・名古屋アジア競技大会期間中に日印友好クリケット試合が開催される。

さらに、**「Cricket Kizuna-75」**の下、インド人コーチ2人が日本を訪問し、若手日本人クリケット選手を対象に1週間の集中トレーニングを行う。これは、クリケットを両国民の新たな友情の架け橋として育てる取り組みである。

2027年2月には日印スポーツ週間も開催され、デリー首都圏ではチーム形式の長距離リレーである駅伝が実施される予定だ。駅伝は日本で広く親しまれており、記念事業ではチームワークと日印の共同歩調を象徴する。

大都市を越えてつながる企業

経済面では、**「Business Connect-75」**を通じ、インドの産業クラスターと日本の地方銀行、その取引先企業との直接的な関係構築を図る。

日本の地方銀行、インドの州政府、金融機関、業界団体、経済団体の参加を得て、インドに焦点を当てたロードショー、ビジネス・ラウンドテーブル、産業クラスター視察、個別商談などが実施される。

同事業は「次世代の州・都道府県パートナーシップ」を基盤とし、インドの各州が、まだインド市場に進出していない専門性の高い日本の中小企業と接点を築く機会となることが期待される。

これに関連する**「Empower Regional Linkage-75」**では、インドの州と日本の都道府県との地域間連携を加速する。

外交関係樹立75周年を記念した相互訪問を促進するとともに、「日印知事友好交流ネットワーク」を含む地方自治体間のネットワーク形成を支援する。

研究室から月面へ

科学・学術協力は、**「MIRAI-VIGYAN-75」**を通じて紹介される。「MIRAI」は日本語の「未来」、「VIGYAN」はヒンディー語の「科学」を意味する。

2027年には、月極域探査機（LUPEX）ミッション、IIT-H Japan Day、日印大学フォーラムなどに関連した特別記念事業が開催される予定である。

LUPEXは日印パートナーシップの高度な科学技術力を象徴し、大学関連事業は研究者、教育機関、学生間の協力拡大につながる。

これらの相互に関連したプログラムを通じ、「日印交流年」は単に外交史を振り返る記念行事ではなく、未来の日印関係を担う世代を積極的に巻き込む一年として位置付けられている。

同時に、両国関係を中央政府や首都の枠から、大学、文化施設、スポーツ会場、研究所、産業クラスター、地域社会へと広げることを目指す。

記念事業の幅広さは、75年間にわたる日印関係の変化を物語っている。外交上の友好関係として始まった両国のつながりは、今や経済、テクノロジー、文化、人々を結ぶ多面的なパートナーシップへと発展している。
