CHENNAI, October 7, 2026: Korean cuisine, traditional music and cultural heritage took centre stage in Chennai as the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Chennai, in collaboration with the InKo Centre, hosted a special celebration of Korea’s National Foundation Day at The Leela Palace Chennai.

The event brought together more than 250 distinguished guests, including representatives of the Government of Tamil Nadu and Government of India, members of the Consular Corps, business and industrial leaders, and prominent figures from Chennai’s cultural and social circles.

A key attraction of the celebration was a Korean Food Festival, which offered guests an opportunity to explore the diverse flavours and culinary traditions of Korea. A curated selection of Korean dishes was presented by Aeseo Korean Restaurant, Chennai, recognised among India’s top 50 restaurants.

The festival also introduced guests to traditional Korean sweets, snacks and beverages associated with festive occasions and holidays. Highlights included Dasik, Yugwa, Gimbugak, Yakgwa, Omija-cha and Sikhye, offering a glimpse into Korean culinary traditions that remain less familiar to international audiences despite the growing popularity of Korean food in India.

Ms. Hye Ran Chun, Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Chennai, said the growing popularity of K-Pop and Korean entertainment in India has also contributed to increasing interest in Korean cuisine.

She said the celebration provided an opportunity to share Korea’s culinary traditions with friends in Chennai, particularly traditional festive delicacies that are not yet widely known outside Korea.

The evening also featured a special performance by Korean traditional music ensemble Ryu Kyunghwa and World Music Ensemble E-DO. Led by acclaimed maestro Ryu Kyung-hwa, the ensemble presented a repertoire highlighting the distinctive sounds and rich heritage of Korean traditional music.

The celebration underscored the growing appreciation for Korean culture in Chennai and Tamil Nadu, while creating another platform for strengthening people-to-people connections between India and the Republic of Korea.

Through cultural, educational and people-to-people initiatives, the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Chennai continues to promote greater understanding and friendship between Korea and South India.
