Campus Placement is one of the highly awaited events in the calendar of many Colleges, especially the job-seeking students. Given the instructions issued by the Governments due to the ongoing pandemic, most of the colleges are closed and activities including Campus Placements have come to a virtual halt temporarily.
Ending the suspense for 1.5 crore final year undergraduate and postgraduate students, the Supreme Court on Friday said the final exams are a must to get degrees. Every year around 1 crore students in India graduate and enter into the workforce, they are now waiting for exams to get over so that they can get degrees and start finding work.
Besides, if we look into the Present Outdated Campus Placement Process, it’s highly skewed towards few Colleges and certain courses like MBA or B Tech. In most of the Colleges in India especially in Tier 2 & 3 cities, there is no concept of Campus Placement. When it comes to finding work post-graduation, most of the students have been self-dependent across smaller towns and cities. Besides, wherever Campus Placement has been taking place, the primary focus remains towards top corporates offering high salaries. Whereas the focus should have been on whether everyone is finding work, whether local Industries/MSMEs/Startups are also able to participate. I think opportunities and possibilities are immense.
I keep saying that this crisis presents an opportunity for everyone to reset the way we work and live. This crisis present opportunity for all the universities and colleges to have a relook at the existing ways of doing Campus Placement and reimagine the whole process by asking the following questions:
First, Why Campus Placements cannot be done Digitally where Students are at home, Corporates do not travel and Colleges manage with all the stakeholders?
Second, Why Campus Placement cannot be done for both Graduate & Post Graduate Students, Diploma Holders, ITI Passouts?
Third, Why Campus Placement be done regularly until every student in the College find work?
Fourth, Why Campus Placement be done in Colleges where it has never been done? Especially in Tier 2 & 3 cities?
Fifthly, Why Campus Placement be done for existing students and provide them apprenticeship, internships, Startup, Part-Time and freelancer opportunities?
We have to ask ourselves the above questions and Reimagine to Replace the Present outdated Campus Placement System. We have to use technology to reach out to students across the country and find out their aspirations. We have to use tools like ‘Remote Hiring’ to enable corporates/MSMEs/Start-ups to reach out to these students in the locations of their choice. We have to encourage students to make a choice to become a Work-Seeker or Work-Provider. I think opportunities are plenty.
Today we are launching a Webinar Series to discuss with the Academia, Students, Industry & Government bodies to discuss the emerging opportunities & Reimagine the Campus Placements and help make every student in the country find work.
