Tokyo: 27 April 2026 – Applications for the prestigious Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship 2027 are now officially open, offering Indian students a valuable opportunity to pursue higher education in Japan across multiple academic pathways. Administered by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the scholarship supports students aiming to enroll in undergraduate programs, National Institute of Technology (KOSEN), and Specialized Training Colleges.

The MEXT Scholarship is widely recognized as one of the most comprehensive and competitive international scholarship programs, designed to foster global talent and strengthen educational and cultural ties between Japan and partner countries, including India.

Under the Undergraduate Students Program, selected candidates will undergo one year of intensive Japanese language training, followed by a four-year bachelor’s degree program at a Japanese university. Upon successful completion, students are awarded a recognized bachelor’s degree, equipping them with both academic knowledge and linguistic proficiency essential for global careers.

The National Institute of Technology (KOSEN) Program offers a more technical and hands-on educational pathway. Students complete one year of Japanese language preparation followed by a three-year associate degree program. KOSEN institutions are known for their integrated curriculum that blends general education with specialized engineering training, preparing students for practical, industry-oriented roles.

For those inclined towards vocational and skill-based education, the Specialized Training College Students Program provides a focused learning experience. This program includes one year of Japanese language study and two years of specialized coursework, leading to an associate-level certification. These colleges emphasize practical skills in various professional fields, making graduates job-ready in a shorter time frame.

The scholarship offers generous financial support to ease the burden on students. Recipients receive a monthly stipend of 117,000 Japanese yen (approximately ₹68,800), along with full coverage of academic expenses, including entrance examination fees, admission fees, and tuition. Additionally, round-trip airfare between India and Japan is fully funded, making it a truly comprehensive package.

From India, approximately 12 candidates are recommended for each program; however, the final selection and allocation of slots are determined by MEXT based on a global pool of applicants. This makes the selection process highly competitive and merit-driven.

Interested applicants must submit their applications by 25th May 2026 through the official portal of the Embassy of Japan in India. Detailed information regarding eligibility criteria, application procedures, and required documentation is available on the embassy’s website.

Successful candidates will begin their academic journey in Japan in April 2027, marking the start of an enriching educational and cultural experience. With its strong academic framework, advanced technological environment, and unique cultural exposure, the MEXT Scholarship continues to open doors for students aspiring to build global careers while strengthening India-Japan relations.
