New Korean Ambassador starts his official work on Friday, visits Indo-Korean Friendship Park on day one

NEW DELHI: Chang Jae-bok, the new South Korean Ambassador to India started his official work on Friday (July 23, 2021) by visiting the Indo-Korean Friendship Park in New Delhi and laying a wreath at the life-size statue of Indian General KS Thimayya here.

Chang Jae-bok (Jae Bok Chang) assumed his office on Wednesday (July 21) as was reported exclusively by Asian Community News (ACN) Network in its July 14 edition. He succeeded Shin Bong-kil who completed three and half years in India and left for Korea on July 1.

“Arriving in New Delhi on July 21st (Wednesday), as every day in India is new, I visited the Korea-India Friendship Park (Korean War Veterans Memorial Park) on the morning of July 23rd (Friday) to visit Timayya who was the chairman of the UN POW Committee at the time of the Korean War,” said in his Facebook post on Friday.

The new Korean Ambassador made the photo of him laying a wreath in front of the statue of Gl. Thimayya, as the profile cover on his Facebook account on Friday.

India’s first Indo-Korean Friendship Park which is the reminiscence of India’s contribution to the Korean War and age-old Indo-Korean relations was constructed in Thimayya Park in Delhi Cantonment Area by the Indian Army in association with the Korean War Veterans Association and Embassy of the Republic of Korea (ROK) in India.

This park has a life-size statue of Gl. Thimayya who had a strong connection with the Korean War (1950-53) fought between South and North Korea. This celebrated Army officer had played an important role in ending the war and making both the warring sides sign the Korean Armistice Agreement in July 1953.

Chang Jae Bok further stated, “Based on a long historical relationship, such as India’s participation in the Korean War, Korea and India have reached the ‘special strategic partnership’. I will do my best to further develop the Korea-India friendly and cooperative relationship by enhancing understanding and trust between the peoples of the two countries based on the achievements accumulated during the tenure of former Ambassador Shin Bong-kil.”

On Friday, Jae Bok Chang also met Nagesh Singh, Chief of Protocol of the Ministry of External Affairs of India, and presented the working copies of his Letter of Credence to him.
