Yakishime: Earth Metamorphosis Showcases Timeless Japanese Ceramic Tradition in New Delhi
焼締―土の変容 時を超える日本の陶芸文化、ニューデリーへ
New Delhi recently hosted Yakishime: Earth Metamorphosis, an exhibition celebrating the enduring tradition of Japanese unglazed ceramics from 3rd February to 15th February, 2026. Presented by The Japan Foundation, New Delhi, in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), the exhibition attracted a footfall of more than 600 visitors, reflecting strong interest among art lovers, students, and cultural enthusiasts. ニューデリーにて2026年2月3日から2月15日にかけて、日本の陶器を紹介する展覧会「焼締―土の変容」が開催された。本展は国際交流基金ニューデリー日本文化センターがインディラ・ガンディー国立芸術センター（IGNCA）と共催したもので、会期中には600名を超える来場者が訪れ、アート愛好家や学生、文化に関心を持つ多くの人々の注目を集めた。
Yakishime refers to high-fired, unglazed ceramics that have been crafted in Japan for over 15th centuries. Formed through the transformative interaction of clay and fire, these works embody simplicity, texture, and a deep connection to nature, with unexpected designs that emerged over a 7 to 10-day period spent in a kiln. 焼締とは、15世紀以上にわたり日本で受け継がれてきた高温焼成の無釉陶を指す。土と火が生み出す変容によって形づくられ、シンプルながらも豊かな質感、自然との深い結びつきを宿すのが特徴。また、7～10日間の窯焚きの過程で生まれる予期せぬ表情が作品に独自の魅力を与える。
The exhibition highlighted the evolution of yakishime—from traditional utilitarian vessels to its development as the tools for a tea ceremony and contemporary artistic expressions—demonstrating how this historic practice continues to hold relevance in modern times. 本展では、伝統的な生活の器としての焼締から、茶道具、そして現代芸術へと展開していく過程が紹介され、歴史的な技法が現代においてもなお重要な意味を持つことを伝えた。
The exhibition was inaugurated by Mr Takashi Ariyoshi, Minister & Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Japan; Dr Sachidanand Joshi, Member Secretary, IGNCA; and Mr Koji Sato, Director General of The Japan Foundation, New Delhi. 開会式には、在インド日本国大使館の有吉孝史次席公使、IGNCAのサチダナンド・ジョシ事務局長、国際交流基金ニューデリー日本文化センターの佐藤幸治所長が出席。
The exhibition was also graced by the presence of His Excellency Ambassador Ono Keiichi, Japan’s Ambassador to India. また、在インド日本国大使の小野啓一 特命全権大使も展覧会を訪れた。
During his visit, Ambassador Ono expressed appreciation for the enthusiastic response from Indian audiences and noted how the Japanese aesthetic philosophy of wabi-sabi—which values simplicity, imperfection, and natural beauty—resonates deeply with art lovers in India. 小野大使は、インドの来場者による熱心な反応に感謝を示すとともに、「侘び寂び」の美意識――素朴さ、自然の美、不完全さの価値観――がインドのアートファンの心にも深く響いていると述べた。
Visitors engaged thoughtfully with the works on display, showing curiosity about traditional firing techniques, material processes, and the cultural significance behind yakishime ceramics. The exhibition served as a meaningful platform for cross-cultural dialogue, reinforcing shared artistic sensibilities between India and Japan. 来場者は展示作品に真摯に向き合い、伝統的な焼成技法や素材のプロセス、焼締が持つ文化的背景に強い興味を示した。本展は、インドと日本の芸術的感性の共通点を再認識し、文化交流を深める意義ある場となった。
The Japan Foundation organises travelling exhibitions that tour outside Japan, featuring our collection, which covers a wide range of fields, including crafts, painting, photography, architecture, and design.
