First Study in Korea Education Fair in Chennai Connects 1,000 Students with 12 Korean Universities
Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister P. Vishwanathan inaugurates the one-day fair, highlighting new opportunities for Korean language education and stronger India–Korea academic ties
Chennai, September 20, 2026: The Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Chennai, in collaboration with the National Institute for International Education (NIIED), organised the first-ever Study in Korea Education Fair in Chennai on September 20 at The Leela Palace Chennai, bringing together 12 Korean universities and more than 1,000 students interested in higher education opportunities in Korea.
The one-day fair provided students with an opportunity to interact directly with representatives of Korean universities and receive one-on-one consultations on academic programmes, admission procedures, scholarships, research opportunities and campus life in Korea.
Among the participating institutions were Kangwon National University, Konkuk University Glocal Campus, Kyungdong University Global, Dongguk University, Chonnam National University and Busan Health University, along with other Korean higher education institutions.
The event was inaugurated by P. Vishwanathan, Minister for Higher Education, Tamil Nadu, who highlighted the importance of international educational opportunities for students in the state.
“ Tamil Nadu has always placed a strong emphasis on accessible, quality higher education and global opportunities for its students. The Study in Korea Education Fair is a valuable platform that connects our young people with leading Korean universities, programmes and opportunities for academic and research collaboration,” the Minister said.
He added that such initiatives could further strengthen educational ties between Tamil Nadu and the Republic of Korea and create new opportunities for students to engage internationally. During his address, he also emphasised the importance of establishing more Korean language centres with the support of the Tamil Nadu Higher Education Department.
Ms Hye Ran Chun, Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Chennai, welcomed participants and highlighted the growing importance of education in the Korea–India relationship.
“Education has become an increasingly important pillar of the Korea–India partnership, especially in Tamil Nadu, creating opportunities for students, researchers and institutions to connect and collaborate,” she said.
She noted the growing interest among students from South India in Korean higher education and said the fair aimed to provide young Indians with greater access to Korean universities, scholarships and research opportunities while strengthening people-to-people and institutional ties between the two countries.
NIIED has previously organised Study in Korea Education Fairs in New Delhi. The Chennai edition marked the first time the initiative was extended to South India, reflecting the increasing interest in Korean higher education among students in the region.
The event concluded with a networking session that brought together representatives of Korean universities and South Indian educational institutions, providing an opportunity to explore further academic and institutional cooperation.
