New Delhi, India, June 12, 2025 — In a significant step toward enhancing bilateral economic engagement and knowledge exchange, the Indo-Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IJCCI) and the All India Management Association (AIMA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening collaboration across small and medium enterprise (SME) development, higher education linkages, and business capacity-building between India and Japan.

Under the MoU, both institutions have committed to working closely on three strategic pillars: a focused SME Entrepreneur Exchange Program, institutional tie-ups with leading Japanese universities, and a series of joint thematic workshops aimed at transferring Japanese best practices to Indian businesses.

Those representing AIMA included Dr. Rohit Singh, Director, Centre for Management Education; Rahul Bhatia, Deputy Director, Centre for Management Education; Ms. Ekta Nayyar, Assistant Director, Centre for Management Education; and Prof. Amit Bhatnagar, Centre for Management Education. The IJCC was represented by Rahul Mishra (Chairman, IJCC), Gajendra Badgujar (Vice-Chairman (Strategy), Prakash Yadav (Vice-Chairman (Corporate Affairs), and Dr. Jatinder Khanna (Policy Maker, Education & Culture).

SME Entrepreneur Exchange Program: One Step Closer to Cross-Border Synergy: The MoU lays the foundation for a sector-focused SME exchange initiative between India and Japan during the financial year 2025–26. The proposed model envisions a curated five-day visit by a 25-member Indian SME delegation to Japan, followed by a reciprocal five-day visit by 25 Japanese SMEs to India.

To ensure meaningful outcomes, each exchange will focus on a specific sector, ranging from textiles, processed food, packaging, and engineering to apparel, aligned with the current trade priorities of both nations. The key objectives include sharing operational best practices, exploring sourcing and export-import opportunities, and facilitating pre-matched B2B meetings between participating SMEs. The delegates will also benefit from exposure to Japanese business culture, technology demonstrations, and factory visits.

As per the MoU, AIMA will take the lead in mobilising Indian SMEs and hosting the Japanese delegation in India, while IJCCI will coordinate with Japanese SMEs and manage the Indian delegation’s visit to Japan. Both organisations retain the autonomy to raise sponsorships independently to subsidise travel and program costs, making the initiative more inclusive and accessible.

Building Academic Bridges: Japan-India Collaboration in Management Education. Recognizing the growing importance of international exposure in business education, the MoU also encourages collaboration between AIMA and Japanese universities that offer English-language postgraduate management programs. IJCCI will facilitate introductions and initiate dialogue with top-tier Japanese institutions, including Hitotsubashi ICS, NUCB, Waseda University, IUJ, Globis, Doshisha, Hosei, Kyoto University, Tsukuba, APU, and Kobe University.

The goal is to explore academic collaborations, including joint immersion modules, credit transfers, and short-term certifications that can be integrated with AIMA’s existing Executive PGDM and other management offerings. These initiatives aim to equip Indian professionals with globally aligned, Japan-focused business acumen—an asset in today’s increasingly interconnected Indo-Pacific economy.

Knowledge Transfer Through Thematic Workshops and Seminars: The third key component of the partnership involves the joint hosting of four thematic workshops annually. These knowledge-driven seminars will focus on proven Japanese practices and business methodologies that Indian enterprises can adopt to enhance efficiency and competitiveness.

Proposed themes include “Kaizen & Lean Manufacturing”, “Doing Business with Japanese Companies”, “Exporting to Japan”, “Total Quality Management (TQM) & 5S”, “Japanese Packaging Standards”, “Technology Transfer and Innovation Access”, and “Cross-Cultural Communication”. These sessions will serve as a platform for industry professionals to learn directly from experts and practitioners, thereby deepening understanding and accelerating Indo-Japanese collaboration at the grassroots business level.

Commenting on the development, senior officials from AIMA and IJCCI expressed optimism about the far-reaching impact of this partnership. “We see this MoU as a catalyst for fostering sustainable business partnerships, cross-border learning, and innovation sharing between India and Japan,” said a joint statement issued by both organisations.

With Japan emerging as a trusted partner in India’s economic and industrial transformation, this new collaborative framework between AIMA and IJCCI is poised to act as a bridge, bringing together entrepreneurs, educators, and business leaders from both countries to co-create a resilient and forward-looking Indo-Japan growth narrative.
