JETRO to Host Webinar on India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act for Japanese Firms
AsiaWise experts to decode compliance risks, governance challenges and practical implementation for companies operating in India
New Delhi, India – The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) will host an online seminar next month to help Japanese companies understand and prepare for compliance with India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDPA), a regulation that is increasingly shaping corporate governance and data management practices across sectors.
Titled “Practical Webinar on Compliance with India’s Personal Data Protection Act,” the session is scheduled for March 6, 2026, and will be conducted online via Zoom, with participation open to up to 500 attendees. The webinar will run from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM (India time) and will be free of cost.
Rising Importance of Data Governance: The webinar aims to go beyond a basic legal overview and examine why India’s new data protection regime is emerging as a critical issue for foreign companies, particularly Japanese firms with growing operations in the country. Organisers said the session will explore how the law is prompting companies to re-evaluate group-level governance structures and the relationship between headquarters in Japan and subsidiaries in India.
With India strengthening its digital regulatory framework, the DPDPA is expected to impact not only technology and consumer-facing firms but also traditional manufacturing companies, including B2B enterprises that handle employee or operational data.
Focus on Practical Compliance: The programme will address key questions such as the objectives of India’s data protection framework, the obligations it places on companies, and the potential risks of non-compliance. Experts will also discuss practical issues including privacy policies, handling sensitive personal information in areas like R&D, and response mechanisms in the event of data incidents.
A significant portion of the discussion will examine real-world compliance challenges faced by Japanese corporate groups. Topics include determining leadership responsibility within multinational structures, aligning global and India-specific data protection policies, and navigating sensitive governance issues such as employee data sharing for audits, fraud investigations and internal reporting.
Expert Panel: The webinar will feature a panel of legal and compliance specialists from the AsiaWise network. Speakers include Kotaro Kubo, Managing Partner and Attorney at Law at AsiaWise Law Office; Hiroki Kunii, Consultant at Wadhwa Law Offices (India) and Attorney (Japanese Law); and Kohei Yamazaki, Certified Public Accountant at AsiaWise Accounting Office.
The session will conclude with a live Q&A segment, allowing participants to seek clarifications on sector-specific concerns and operational challenges.
Registration Details: Participation is free, and interested attendees can register online until March 5, 2026. Registered participants will receive access details ahead of the webinar. JETRO’s New Delhi office is coordinating the event and has encouraged companies to test their Zoom connectivity in advance to ensure seamless participation.
Growing Compliance Awareness: The upcoming webinar reflects rising awareness among Japanese businesses about India’s evolving regulatory environment, particularly in areas such as digital governance, data localisation and compliance risk management. As India’s digital economy expands and regulatory oversight deepens, such capacity-building initiatives are expected to play a crucial role in helping foreign firms align with local legal frameworks while maintaining global governance standards.
The session is part of JETRO’s continued efforts to support Japanese enterprises navigating India’s fast-evolving policy landscape and strengthening Japan–India business collaboration in the digital era.
