Sikkim to induct Japanese, other foreign languages in more schools, colleges to make students employable

The Sikkim government has realised the strong possibility of sending its young labour force to developed economies like Japan to not only improve on their technical skills but also gain meaningful employment.

TOKYO: With an intent to make youths employable and send them to work in Japan and Korea, the Sikkim government is contemplating of revamping its skill development centre, and may soon launch many initiatives including introducing Japanese and other foreign languages in college and schools in its state. As the volume of investment by the Japanese and Korean companies continues to witness rising trend in recent years, the Government of Sikkim sees strong possibility of sending its young labour force to developed economies like Japan and Korea.

An indication to this effect was given by Karma R. Bonpo, Secretary, Department of Commerce & Industries Government of Sikkim シッキム州政府 商工部 次官 カルマ・ボンポ 氏 パネリスト, during his address at the India-Japan Skill Connect’ conference (インド日本スキルコネクト会議) organized by the CII at the Indian embassy in Tokyo on Friday. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Electronics and Information Technology, announced also launched “Skill Facilitation Cell” on this occasion.

“The Government of Sikkim has also realised the strong possibility of sending its young labour force to developed economies like Japan to not only improve on their technical skills but also gain meaningful employment. The youth of the Sikkim are aspirational and aspire for better jobs and growth opportunities and Japan can be an important destination for their career development.

Sikkim and the entire North East India has very high labour potential specifically in sectors like Health and Wellness and Hospitality,” said Karma R. Bonpo who led the CII delegation to Korea and Japan from July 31-August 5.

In a significant statement, the secretary said that the Sikkim government was now looking at revamping the skill development centre and making people ready for new and emerging job opportunities.  He said, “There are plans of introducing Japanese and other foreign languages at the college and schools’ level so that we produce a workforce which is global in its orientation. We believe the young students should view the entire world as a workplace and should now gather the skills to compete in this vast ocean of talent.”

India Japan Skills Connect

Established in Sikkim in 2015, the Skill Development Department in Sikkim undertakes various programs and schemes to develop the overall skill of the youth and younger generation whereby employment and entrepreneurship opportunities are made available. The department under the charge of the Minister, Bhim Hang Limboo, is housed in Shram Bhawan, Sokaythang, Tadong.

The secretary said that the Governments were now working to facilitate the private sector in skills and placing the labour force oversees to release better incomes and job opportunities. “We believe the individual state governments of India and private sector needs to work together to realize the vast potential of the Indo Japan partnerships.”

While commenting on the CII delegation, Karma R. Bonpo said that on personnel note this visit to was an eye-opening journey on scope of the opportunities for our people in getting meaningful jobs and making a better career for themselves. “All the delegates representing the best talent houses of India are now eager to work on this momentum and I am definitely sure that with their entrepreneurial skills will unlock this huge potential offered by Indo-Japan relations. Each one is eager to work with companies in Japan in sending the vast talented workforce of India for the further economic growth of Japan,” he added.
