South Korean Defence Minister meets Korean War veterans, families in India

NEW DELHI: Minister of National Defence of South Korea Jeong Kyeong-doo who was recently on India’s visit to attend DefExpo-2020, met the Korean War Veterans and their families to pay his gratitude for India’s contribution and support in Korean War.

During a gala dinner hosted by the South Korean minister on February 5 in a starter hotel in New Delhi, he praised India for sending its non-combat paramedics to support South Korea during the Korean war 1950-52.

Jeong Kyeong-doo also visited the 60th Para Field Ambulance Hospital in Agra the next day on February 6 before leaving for South Korea.

Dol. Tapan Kumar Pant, JL, Defence Attache, Embassy of India, Seoul and other dignitaries accompanied the South Korean minister to India.

Col. Lee IN, the Defence Attaché, Embassy of South Korea, New Delhi said that the Korean National Defence Minister appreciated the government of India for sending 60th Para Field Ambulance Hospital paratroopers providing medical service to the injured soldiers during the Korean War and it would forever remain in the heart of the Korean people.

Present of the occasion were Yoo Chang -ho, Minister-Counselor, Political Affairs, Embassy of Republic of Korea in India;  Jongho Choi, Minister, Embassy of ROK  in India;   Lt. Col Kim Hyunsoon, Army Attache, Embassy of ROK  in India;  and Sur Dr. Akshay Sur and Anil Malhotra from Korean War Veterans Association.

Before attending the DefExpo 2020 titled ‘Digital Transformation of Defence’, the South Korean Defence Minister also called on Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on February 4.

Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, Army Chief General Manoj Naravane and Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh were also present in the Ministerial-level Defence dialogue between India and South Korea held in New Delhi.

The Minister said India and South Korea recognized that unity and centrality of ASEAN must be a key element in developing an Indo-Pacific vision.

He said in a series of tweets post the meeting, Singh said, he looks forward to investment by South Korean companies in Indian defense corridors.

He said the Defence Corridors present an excellent opportunity for South Korean industries to establish their manufacturing units, benefit from the skilled and economical labor force, natural resources, and tailored incentives.

“The theme of DefExpo-2020 in Lucknow is ‘Digital Transformation of Defence’ and India and South Korea recognize the influence of Artificial Intelligence and digital technology in the defence sector. Both the nations are ready to leverage mutual strengths in digital applications and other advanced technologies,” added Singh.
