New Delhi, India – A milestone in Asian cinema, Demon Hunters—the first Indo-Taiwanese co-produced feature film—is set for theatrical release in India, marking a historic partnership and cultural fusion between the two film industries. The first Indo-Taiwanese co-production, the movie is scheduled to be screened at Priya PVR Cinema in New Delhi on December 12-13 at the initiative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center (TECC) in India.

Helmed by acclaimed Taiwanese director Chen Mei-Juin, the film is jointly produced by Taiwan’s Light House Productions and India’s Kleos Entertainment Group, with distribution in Taiwan handled by Vie Vision Pictures.

While interacting with senior Indian media representatives recently, Ambassador Dr Chen Mu-min, Representative of TECC, New Delhi, stated that this year, Taiwan and India are celebrating 30 years of partnership. “And to commemorate this big moment, we are organising a series of major cultural and business events, including the Taiwan Film Festival, and we will have several cultural events and a seminar too.”

Set between Taiwan and India, Demon Hunters is an action-comedy-horror centring on the unlikely alliance of Tommy (JC Lin), a semi-fake paranormal YouTuber from Taiwan, and Aryan (Arjan Bajwa), an Indian computer geek and the grandson of a legendary exorcism guru. When Tommy’s partner is possessed by a powerful demon, he seeks Aryan’s help to face an asura (a demon rooted in Indian mythology), unleashing a zany cross-border adventure filled with martial arts, ancient rituals, and slapstick humour.

The narrative delves deeply into both Indian and Taoist beliefs, with extensive research ensuring cultural authenticity, even as the film delivers campy scares and comic set pieces.

The cast features Regina Lei as the possessed Arumi, Jack Kao in a pivotal role as Aryan’s mentor, and Harry Chan. Notably, Demon Hunters includes two original song-and-dance numbers—one shot with Bollywood grandeur and another featuring comedic choreography reminiscent of Jackie Chan classics. Cinematography is by Tony Cheung, renowned for his work on action blockbusters, adding visual flair to the film’s blend of spectacular stunts and comedic visual gags.

Shooting spanned locations across Taipei, heritage sites, and bustling Indian cities, with several production challenges met through meticulous international teamwork. “We crafted a zombie chicken puppet for a pivotal comedic-horror scene, bringing tactile humour and practical effects to the heart of the story,” recalls Chen Mei-Juin.

The producers, Cindy Shyu and Gayathiri Guliani, emphasise the film’s intent: “to celebrate both countries while forging genuine cinematic magic, not just superficial entertainment.” Their commitment is reflected not only in the onscreen synergy but also in the film’s innovative financing, including tokenised, blockchain-based royalties for investors.

Demon Hunters first attracted global buzz with a preview at the Cannes Film Market and has since been recognised as a hot project by Screen International and other industry trackers. Actor Arjan Bajwa describes the film as “an exhilarating and humbling bridge between two cultures, blending Bollywood energy with the discipline and wit of Taiwanese cinema.” For JC Lin, the partnership has offered “a truly unique opportunity to learn, collaborate, and entertain across linguistic and cultural borders.”

Now in post-production and slated for a winter 2025 release, Demon Hunters stands as a pioneering cinematic alliance and a celebration of shared creativity—offering Indian audiences a supernatural roller-coaster that is as heartfelt as it is hilarious.
