Haryana top cop, an amateur golfer Kulvinder Singh continues his winning streak

NEW DELHI. Ace golfer Kulvinder Singh, an IPS officer and currently the Joint Commissioner of Police Gurugram continues to earn accolades for the Haryana state and also makes his country proud by winning golfing medals, one after another in a series of events held domestically as well as across the world. Playing golf for about 20 years now, Singh added one more feather to his cap recently when he was part of the team of senior police officers from Haryana that won gold, silver, and bronze medals in individual and team categories of golf in the World Police and Fire games 2022 organized at Rotterdam, the Netherlands on July 22 – 31.

Kulvinder Singh won a silver medal in an individual competition, and gold and silver medals with his teammate, deputy inspector general, Border Security Force (BSF), Pushpender Singh Rathore. These games are held every two years in which policemen and firemen from all over the world participate. More than three hundred golfers participated in the event.

Besides this the team of Kulvinder Singh and Pushpender Singh Rathor won silver medal also and Pushpender Singh won two silver medals in the individual event and Kulvinder Singh got a bronze. The team consisting of Mr. K.K. Sindhu IPS (Retd) and Dr Kashmir Singh IPS (Retd) also won a silver medal. This is one of the highest medal tally by the Indian golfer in the world police and fire games.

The event was held over three days at three different courses in Rotterdam namely CROMSTRIJEN golf club, Golfschol De HOOGE and KLEIBURG Golf club. Overall, eight personnel of the Haryana Police won medals during the fourth edition of the World Police and Fire Games in 2022.

This year’s games saw police forces from more than 70 countries compete in 63 sports. The games were held from July 22 till July 31. The first such games were held in San Jose, California in 1985. Since then, the games are held biennially. The latest edition, however, was postponed by a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Previous also in 2011, the then Gurgaon DCP Kulvinder Singh had won silver in US golf tournament – World Police and Fire Games held in New York. The event was held at the Herbert Hoover Disc Golf Course and Split Rock Golf Course from August 26 to September 5.

In 2012, Kulvinder Singh, then posted in Mewat had won the overall individual championship in the 20th All India Police Golf Championship held at Jaypee Greens golf course in Greater Noida. The event was held on September 27 and 28.

He also had won an award for ‘closest to the pin’ at the annual event where hundreds of sportspersons participate from police organisations in the country. The championship was organised by the Uttar Pradesh police during that year.

“It is a proud moment to win the award of an overall champion (individual). I have participated in various golfing event not just in India but across the world. Increasingly, more and more people are showing their interest in golf, which was earlier opted by only a few in the society,” had said Kulvinder Singh.

Singh took up the sport when his growing age started becoming a hurdle for him while playing hockey.

Singh has also participated in several international and national events including World Police and Fire Games (WPFG) 2015 at Fairfax County in US. He even won the overall golf championship at the 16th All India Police Golf 3-day Tournament held in 2012.

In 2017 also Singh was among the two police officers from NCR who had done India proud by winning four medals in golf at the World Police and Fire Services Games held in the US.

Kulvinder Singh, who was then posted as Commandant at the 4th Indian Reserve Battalion at Manesar, had partnered DIG (BSF) Pushpendra Rathore to win two medals in the team event in different handicap categories.

The event was held in LA and saw the participation of 250 golfers from 80 countries.

Other participants from India were mostly professional sportspersons who were in the police due to their sporting accomplishments.
